History of The Grange

Elslack Grange was first rented by my great grandfather JJ Duckworth in 1915 for the rent of £20 per annum, from George Richard Lane Fox of Bramham Park. On the 9th February 1916 'JJ' bought the house for the sum of £550.

'JJ' made lots of internal changes over the years. One of them being the addition of oak pannelling in the 'smoke room',  now the dining room and in 1936 put an extension above the current kitchen for an extra bedroom.

Originally, Elslack Grange comprised of both 'The Grange' & 'Grange Cottage'.  Since JJ's  death in 1963 my grandparents moved in to run 'Elslack Estate'  and made changes of their own.

One of the first things they did was take down the extention over the kitchen! They also separated Grange Cottage from the main house though kept access from the kitchen.  My grandmother's sister, Marjorie & husband Frank Malina (the rocket scientist) used this cottage for  her visits from Paris.

In 1999 my husband & I bought The Grange, as it's now known, from my grandmother, as she was being 'cared for' in Cross Hills. After many years of fighting planning officials we finally finished the renovation in 2004. The building was completely gutted as it hadn't seen many changes in the 30 years my grandparents lived in it. Underfloor heating was put in, porches added, all internal doors changed, all windows replaced, staircase moved & glass pannelling put in to create more light. One of the significant changes we made was to put the original extention over the kitchen back on!! We also removed the outdoor tennis court & replaced it with a very large pond.

The pictures below show Elslack Grange through the years. From the early 1900's to just before the renovations started in 2001
